It originally launched in 1992 as a test transmission for Classic FM and later reappeared in 2008 as a temporary replacement for Oneword Radio on DAB. The station gained a niche following for its relaxing and unique content. Birdsong Radio ceased operations in 2014, but the concept has inspired similar nature-themed broadcasts.
